Sauna Stone Replacement in Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa

Sauna stone replacement is an important part of regular sauna heater maintenance. During use, sauna stones are repeatedly exposed to high temperatures and cooling, which gradually causes them to become brittle, crack and crumble. Worn stones can reduce airflow inside the heater and affect both the quality of the steam and the performance of the heater.

FixMate provides sauna stone replacement in Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa, as well as throughout the surrounding capital region. The service is available for standard electric sauna heaters, column heaters and wood-burning sauna stoves, depending on the heater model, manufacturer instructions and required amount of stones.

You can send us a photo of the sauna heater together with the brand and model. Based on this information, we can often estimate the required amount of sauna stones and the price of the work before the visit.

What is included in sauna stone replacement?

During sauna stone replacement, the old stones are removed from the heater and the stone compartment is inspected before new stones are installed. The scope of the work depends on the heater construction and the total stone capacity.

• removal of old sauna stones
• removal of stone fragments and loose debris
• visual inspection of the sauna heater
• rinsing new sauna stones when necessary
• correct placement of new sauna stones
• maintaining proper airflow between the stones
• removal of old stones from the property when agreed
• cleaning the work area after completion

New sauna stones can be purchased by the customer or supplied by FixMate if agreed when booking the service. When we supply the stones, the correct stone size and quantity are selected according to the heater manufacturer's instructions.

Why should sauna stones be replaced?

Sauna stones are not a permanent component of the heater. They are consumable material that gradually wears down during use. Repeated heating and cooling stresses the stones, causing them to become brittle and crumble over time.

When small fragments and stone dust accumulate between the stones, airflow inside the heater can become restricted. Good-quality stones of the correct size, arranged properly, allow hot air to circulate through the heater as intended.

Replacing the stones also provides an opportunity to notice visibly damaged heating elements, bent components or other obvious problems. Electrical repairs themselves are not included in a standard sauna stone replacement service.

When should sauna stones be replaced?

There is no single replacement interval suitable for every sauna. The need for replacement depends especially on how often the sauna is used, the heater design, the total amount of stones and the type of stones used.

In a regularly used home sauna, it is a good idea to inspect the condition of the stones at least once a year. The more frequently the sauna is heated, the faster the stones usually wear out.

Sauna stone replacement may be necessary if:

• the stones crack easily
• a large amount of stone debris collects at the bottom of the heater
• the stones have become visibly brittle
• the stone mass has settled significantly
• the sauna heats differently than before
• a long time has passed since the previous stone replacement

How many kilograms of sauna stones are needed?

The required amount of sauna stones depends entirely on the heater model. A small wall-mounted electric sauna heater may contain only around 20–30 kg of stones, while large column heaters can require more than 100 kg.

The correct stone capacity should always be checked in the sauna heater manufacturer's instructions. If you do not know the heater model, you can send us a photo of the heater and its identification plate.

✓ 20–30 kg: typically a small or medium-sized standard electric sauna heater.
✓ 40–50 kg: a larger wall-mounted or floor-standing electric sauna heater.
✓ 60–70 kg: a larger heater or a smaller high-stone-capacity model.
✓ 80–90 kg: often a larger floor-standing or column-style sauna heater.
✓ 100–120 kg: a large stone capacity commonly found in column heaters.
✓ 130–160 kg or more: large column heaters and other high-capacity sauna heater models.

Sauna stone replacement prices in Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa

The price of sauna stone replacement depends mainly on the amount of stone inside the heater. The more stones the heater contains, the more time is required to remove the old stones, clean the stone compartment, prepare the new stones and arrange them correctly.

The heater construction also affects the workload. Replacing the stones in a small wall-mounted heater is usually quicker than servicing a tall column heater containing 100–160 kg of stones.

FixMate's approximate prices:

Stone capacity Approximate price
Sauna stone replacement 20–30 kg approximately €130–160
Sauna stone replacement 40–50 kg approximately €150–190
Sauna stone replacement 60–70 kg approximately €180–230
Sauna stone replacement 80–90 kg approximately €210–270
Sauna stone replacement 100–120 kg approximately €250–330
Sauna stone replacement 130–160 kg approximately €320–420
More than 160 kg or an unusually large heater price by quotation

The prices are approximate. In addition to stone capacity, the final price is affected by the type of heater, carrying distance, removal of old stones and the type of new sauna stones selected.

When standard sauna stones suitable for the heater are used, we can often provide a preliminary total price based on photos, the heater model and the required stone quantity.

Special sauna stones, decorative stones and manufacturer-specific stone solutions are priced separately.

What affects the price of sauna stone replacement?

✓ Stone capacity: servicing a 20 kg heater requires considerably less work than servicing a column heater containing more than 100 kg of stones.
✓ Heater construction: tall column heaters usually require slower and more careful stone placement than standard wall-mounted heaters.
✓ Type of stones: the price of standard sauna stones and special stones can differ significantly.
✓ Removal of old stones: a large stone capacity also means a greater amount of heavy material that needs to be transported away.
✓ Access to the sauna: long carrying distances or difficult access can increase the total working time.

Electric sauna heater stone replacement

When arranging stones in an electric sauna heater, it is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions. Stones should not be packed too tightly around the heating elements because air needs to circulate through the stone mass.

During replacement, the old stones are carefully removed, loose stone debris is cleared away and the visible condition of the heating elements is inspected. The new stones are then arranged according to the manufacturer's instructions.

If a damaged heating element or another electrical fault is noticed during the work, the customer will be informed. Electrical repairs must be carried out by a qualified electrical professional.

Column sauna heater stone replacement

Column sauna heaters often contain considerably more stones than standard wall-mounted heaters. Depending on the model, the stone capacity may range from several dozen kilograms to well over 100 kg.

The larger stone capacity makes replacement more labour-intensive. Special attention must also be paid to stone placement so that the stones are not packed too tightly and air can circulate through the heater as intended.

For column heaters, we recommend sending us a photo together with the heater brand and model in advance so that the correct stone quantity and workload can be estimated as accurately as possible.

Wood-burning sauna stove stone replacement

We also replace sauna stones in wood-burning sauna stoves. The correct stone size and required quantity are determined according to the stove manufacturer's instructions.

When the old stones are removed, loose fragments and debris can be cleaned from the stone compartment before the new stones are installed.

Maintenance of other stove structures, smoke channels or the chimney is not automatically included in standard sauna stone replacement. Any additional work is agreed separately.

Which sauna stones should be used?

The correct sauna stone should primarily be selected according to the heater manufacturer's recommendation. Many standard Finnish sauna heaters use durable stones specifically intended for sauna use, such as olivine diabase.

The stone size must match the heater construction. Stones that are too small or unsuitable can become packed too tightly, while incorrectly arranged larger stones can create an uneven stone mass.

Some heater manufacturers may require a specific stone type or particular stone size. For this reason, the exact heater model should be identified before purchasing new stones.

How does sauna stone replacement work?

1. Checking the heater. We identify the heater type, stone capacity and appropriate stone size.
2. Removing the old stones. The stones are carefully removed from the heater.
3. Cleaning the stone compartment. Loose stone fragments and debris are removed.
4. Visual inspection. The visible heating elements and internal parts of the heater are checked during the work.
5. Preparing the new stones. The stones are cleaned of loose dust when necessary before installation.
6. Arranging the stones. New stones are placed according to manufacturer instructions while maintaining sufficient airflow.
7. Finishing. The work area is cleaned and the old stones are removed from the property if this has been agreed.

What happens to the old sauna stones?

Sauna stone replacement can produce a considerable amount of heavy waste material. Even a standard home sauna heater may contain several dozen kilograms of old stones.

Removal of the old sauna stones from the property can be agreed when booking the service. If the customer prefers to dispose of the stones themselves, we can leave them in an agreed location.

For large stone quantities, such as 100–160 kg, please inform us in advance if removal is required so that sufficient transport capacity can be arranged.

How to prepare for sauna stone replacement

✓ The heater and sauna stones must be completely cool before the installer arrives.
✓ Do not heat the sauna on the same day before the scheduled visit.
✓ Make sure there is clear access to the sauna heater.
✓ If you know the brand and model of the heater, send us the information in advance.
✓ A photo of the heater helps us estimate the stone capacity and the scope of the work.

Sauna stone replacement as part of sauna maintenance

Sauna stone replacement can be ordered as a separate service or combined with other sauna maintenance work during the same visit.

Other tasks can include:

• sauna bench oiling
• sauna bench cleaning
• light sanding of sauna benches
• treatment of other wooden sauna surfaces
• general visual inspection of the sauna
• other small sauna maintenance tasks

Combining sauna stone replacement with bench maintenance during the same visit is a convenient way to carry out more comprehensive annual sauna maintenance at once.

Household tax deduction for sauna stone replacement

Maintenance and renovation work carried out in a home or holiday home may qualify for the Finnish household tax deduction depending on the nature of the work and the current conditions set by the Finnish Tax Administration.

In 2026, qualifying maintenance and renovation work purchased from a company may be eligible for a deduction equal to 35% of the VAT-inclusive labour cost. The deduction does not apply to sauna stones, other materials or travel expenses.

The current rules and eligibility conditions should always be checked with the Finnish Tax Administration according to your individual circumstances.

Frequently asked questions about sauna stone replacement

How much does sauna stone replacement cost in Helsinki?

Replacing the stones in a small heater containing approximately 20–30 kg of stones generally costs around €130–160. The price increases according to the amount of stones and the amount of work required. Replacing the stones in a heater containing more than 100 kg may cost approximately €250–400 or more.

How much does sauna stone replacement cost in Espoo or Vantaa?

Prices in Espoo and Vantaa are generally at the same level as in Helsinki. The final price depends mainly on the heater's stone capacity, its construction, the type of stones used and whether the old stones need to be removed from the property.

How often should sauna stones be replaced?

The replacement interval depends on how frequently the sauna is used and the condition of the stones. In a regularly used home sauna, the condition of the stones should be checked at least once a year. Stones that are cracked, crumbling or heavily deteriorated should be replaced.

How do I know how many kilograms of stones my heater needs?

The exact stone capacity can usually be found in the sauna heater manual or the manufacturer's technical specifications. If you do not know the model, you can send FixMate a photo of the heater and identification plate and we can help estimate the required amount.

Can you bring the new sauna stones?

Yes, this can be agreed when booking the service. The customer can purchase suitable stones themselves, or FixMate can arrange standard stones suitable for the heater. Special and manufacturer-specific stones are priced separately.

Do you remove the old sauna stones?

Removal of the old stones can be included in the service by agreement. For particularly large quantities of stones, please let us know in advance so that the necessary transport can be arranged.

Do you replace stones in column sauna heaters?

Yes. Stone replacement for column sauna heaters is included in our services. Because column heaters can contain considerably more stones than standard heaters, the price is based on the stone capacity and construction of the heater.

Do you replace stones in wood-burning sauna stoves?

Yes. Sauna stones can be replaced in both electric and wood-burning sauna heaters. The correct stone size and quantity are selected according to the heater manufacturer's instructions.

How long does sauna stone replacement take?

Replacing the stones in a small sauna heater can usually be completed relatively quickly. Large column heaters or heaters containing more than 100 kg of stones require more time. Carrying the new stones and removing the old stones can also affect the total working time.

Can sauna stone replacement and sauna bench oiling be done during the same visit?

Yes. Sauna stone replacement and sauna bench oiling can be combined during the same visit. Other small sauna maintenance tasks can also be carried out at the same time.

Can the sauna be heated before the installer arrives?

No. The sauna heater and stones must be completely cool before the work begins. A large stone mass can take a long time to cool, so the sauna should not be heated before the scheduled maintenance visit.

Can good old sauna stones be reused?

The condition of the stones can be checked during the work. However, if the entire stone mass has been used for a long time and the stones are clearly worn, replacing the complete set is generally the best way to achieve a consistent result.
